Intelligent tutorial systems (ITS) offer digital learning formats that can adapt to the learning level, learning pace and learning behaviour of each individual student. Due to their adaptive character, they have the potential to support learners in their individual learning process as well as teachers and learning groups in their work.
In the study, which the FiBS team is conducting on behalf of the Vodafone Foundation, the use of ITS in the German school system is being researched. The aim is to identify possible obstacles and weaknesses as well as success factors with regard to the implementation and use of ITS in schools. The focus is on the individual learning and practice context of students (micro-level of the learning individuals) as well as on the use of ITS by teachers (meso-level of teaching and testing in learning groups).
For the study, problem-centred interviews are conducted with the selected providers of ITS as well as with school principals, teachers and school boards in five federal states. The respective state data protection officers as well as the responsible state institutions (state media institutes and state advanced training institutes) and representatives of the ministries of education and cultural affairs are also interviewed.
The results of the study will be:
- an orientation paper for school authorities and education policy makers that defines the conditions for success and failure and serves to implement and integrate ITS into the classroom, and
- guidelines for schools to support the implementation and use of ITS.
