Klaus Hurrelmann is one of the leading education and socialization researchers in Germany and also a health scientist. With around 45 years of experience in the fields of sociology, psychology and education, he will support the FiBS team with his extensive expertise as an external consultant from the beginning of April 2020.

In 1975, after his habilitation habilitated with the writing he took over a professorship for empirical educational and socialization research at the University of Essen. In 1980 he moved to the Faculty of Education at Bielefeld University. There, from 1994 onwards, he was the founding dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences and built a cooperation center for child and adolescent health on behalf of the World Health Organization (WHO).

He can also look back on a large number of research projects. The main focus was on family and school conditions of performance and personality development, the connection between socialization and health and the development and evaluation of prevention strategies for risk behavior such as violence, addiction and psychosomatic health disorders.

Professor Hurrelmann was also a member of the management team for the latest Shell Youth Studies, initiated the World Vision Children's Studies using the same format and led them several times.

Hurrelmann has been a Senior Professor of Public Health and Education at the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin since 2009. In 2018 he received the title of an honorary doctor from the PH Freiburg.
