Despite positive research findings overall, community schools have so far played a rather subordinate role in the Berlin school landscape, measured by their prevalence: in the 2008/2009 school year, 11 school networks initially started as community schools as part of a pilot project. Fifteen years later, there were only 24 publicly funded community schools.
A study is being conducted to determine the organisational and structural hurdles and conditions for the successful introduction of community schools, and to derive recommendations for action from the results. To this end, a scoping review is being prepared, interviews are being conducted with school principals, parents and school supervisors, among others, and focus groups are being organised.
