Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) has become a central instrument for overcoming the global challenges of the 21st century. It plays a key role in promoting the knowledge, skills and values needed to achieve social, economic and ecological transformations. In view of the urgency of achieving the goals formulated in the 2030 Agenda and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), it is crucial to anchor ESD at the national and local levels. Against this background, an ESD master plan is being developed for the state of Berlin based on the National Action Plan for ESD and in coordination with UNESCO's ‘Roadmap ESD 2030’.
This master plan is being developed by a consortium consisting of the FiBS Research Institute for the Economics of Education and the Foundation ‘Kinder forschen’ (Children do research). As part of a status analysis, relevant education stakeholders will be surveyed online regarding their activities in the field of ESD. The results of the status analysis form the starting point for a participatory process in which the framework conditions, orientation, goals, measures and recommendations of the master plan are discussed with various stakeholders. To this end, large group workshops, focus groups and online events are held in a multi-stage process.
