Research areas

FiBS conducts research on all phases of lifelong learning – preschool, primary and secondary education, vocational training, higher education, and continuing education – as well as on intersections with the labour market, innovation, digitization, demographic developments, and social issues. We support our clients with studies and expert assessments, concept development, and evaluations and forecasts that focus on the economic aspects of learning and education. The following pages describe the various phases of learning and education and the questions and aspects of each that we deal with.

Research Fields

  • Preschool

    Since early learning both in and outside of preschool is decisive for further individual development, all children must be reached.

  • Primary and Secondary School

    School is (only) one important part of learning during childhood and adolescence. Thus we focus on learning both in and outside of school.

  • Higher Education

    The social and professional importance of higher education continues to grow. Universities are transforming from educational institutions into advanced training centres.

  • Vocational Training

    Dual and formal education remain a key path to the job market. A better effort must be made to reach underrepresented target groups.

  • Continuing Education

    Continuing education is the key to the future. Only those who never stop learning will manage to achieve success in an ever-changing world.

  • Job Market

    Even though education is not oriented exclusively toward the job market, it determines employment opportunities and is decisive for success.

  • Digitization

    Learning and education prepare both younger and older people for digitization. We analyse what lies ahead, and what strategies can be successful in getting there.

    The economy’s capacity for innovation, like its ability to make use of new developments, depends on the quality of education and access to it.
